As a parent, there are a lot of things that will break your heart, like seeing your baby in pain, especially when you don’t know how to help. All of my children struggled with constipation when they started solids for what felt like forever, and despite trying everything I could think of, nothing seemed to work. It wasn’t until my third baby, I finally found a cure. This is the story of our journey, the frustrations I faced, and the surprising fruit that finally gave my baby the relief we both so desperately needed.

The Struggle with Constipation

When my children started solids at 6 months old the problem of constipation always arose. At first, it was mild, more solid poops, which is usual when starting solids. But as the days went on it would become more of a problem. Poops would be harder and harder for them to pass. There would be a day or two without any bowel movements, and when they did, it was clear how much pain they were in. They would cry, strain, and end up with hard, dry stools that seemed to take forever to pass.

I tried everything I could find on the internet and advice from my pediatrician, from baby massage to different baby probiotics, but nothing worked. I tried the “P fruits” I kept hearing about: pears, prunes, peaches, and plums. I tried the juices of those same fruits. I tried them all, and while they seemed to help a little at first, they weren’t the miracle fix I was hoping for. Each time I thought we were in the clear, my baby would go back to struggling again, sometimes worse than before.

The Miralax Dilemma

At this point, I started looking into more serious options. Miralax (polyethylene glycol) kept coming up in the conversation with my pediatrician. People claimed it was a lifesaver for constipation, but I just couldn’t bring myself to use it. I wasn’t comfortable with the idea of giving my baby a chemical laxative—especially on a regular basis. I kept reading about potential long-term side effects and just felt uneasy about introducing something so strong into their little bodies.

As my children grew their bodies adjusted and we didn’t struggle with it as much anymore but it was a long road. Some things would work just enough to take the edge off along with limiting foods that would aid in constipation like cheese and other dairy products. Oh, how my babies loved those foods!

When I had my third baby and she started solids we had the same problem! I was so lost on what to do. As time went on, I grew more and more desperate. I didn’t want to see her in pain anymore. I kept doing research, hoping I’d find something else, anything else, that could offer her relief.

A Surprising Discovery: The Fruit That Worked

Months before my third baby started solids I stumbled across a video online about the effects a certain fruit had on bowel movements. I had heard a lot about the benefits of different fruits and vegetables and had already tried them with no luck. This wasn’t a fruit that had been recommended for constipation before.

When my baby started solids, constipation began. At first, I had forgotten about the magic fruit I had learned about. I returned to my old ways, trying all the “p fruits" and juices with no luck.

Then it hit me. Yellow Dragon fruit!

We had tasted red dragon fruit in the past and were not fans of it. I had never had yellow dragon fruit, and I wasn’t even sure I could buy it in my grocery store. Thankfully, I found it at Kroger! It’s a strange fruit. It tasted mildly sweet, with a weird slimy texture and crunchy seeds. I liked it; it was a lot better than the red dragon fruit. I prayed my baby would like it also.

At first, I was skeptical. Why would this work? None of the other fruits did. But I was desperate. I started giving my baby small amounts of yellow dragon fruit, not expecting much, but within 24 hours, things began to change. She had her first successful bowel movement, and it wasn’t painful. It was soft, and she didn’t struggle at all. I couldn’t believe it—was this really happening?

I gave her the yellow dragon fruit for a few more days, offering it to her regularly, and the results were consistent. No more crying. No more straining. No more worrying about when her next movement would come. It was like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders.

Why Yellow Dragon Fruit?

Yellow Dragon fruit is high in soluble fiber. Soluble fiber binds to water. This helps to soften your stools, making them easier to pass. For us, it turned out to be the key to unlocking relief.

Additionally, yellow dragon fruit supports the immune system, reduces blood sugar, and supports cardiovascular health. To read more about the benefits of yellow dragon fruit check out this article from Very Well Health.

The Takeaway

I know how overwhelming and frustrating it can be when you’re trying everything to help your baby, but nothing seems to work. I felt helpless, exhausted, and honestly, like I was failing as a parent. But finding that one fruit—yellow dragon fruit—was the answer I needed. It might not work for everyone, but if you’re struggling with constipation, I encourage you to give it a try.

Remember to start with small amounts. One slice for breakfast and wait until the next day to offer again. If you see no results, up the amount.

Thankfully, my baby is now doing much better, she’s almost 2 years old and her digestive system seems much happier. It’s a relief that I didn’t have to resort to anything drastic or chemical-based—and that a simple, natural fruit could make such a big difference. It worked so well that her BM’s would become mushy so I would cut back and figure out the correct “dosage” to keep her consistent but not too loose. I had finally found the cure for my baby! She never had trouble pooping again. It eventually got to where she was able to skip days and then weeks of eating the yellow dragon fruit. If I notice her poops getting too hard I would just give her two 1 inch chunks of yellow dragon fruit and problem solved.

To any parent dealing with the same issue, I see you. You’re doing your best, and even if it doesn’t feel like it sometimes, your baby will get through this. Try this magic fruit and let me know if it helped you!
